Welcome from Chair of the School Advisory Board

I am always very proud to say I am Chair of the School Advisory Board at Danemill - not because of anything I have done but because it is such a fantastic school to be associated with. The children are a pleasure to visit and are keen and eager to learn. I regularly receive comments such as "aren't they all so polite" and "they were so well behaved". The staff and school leadership team are committed to ensuring your children have the opportunity to develop and learn by maximising learning opportunities. The school also benefits from great parental support, together with support from the extended Enderby community - so thank you. I see my role as ensuring that all decisions made by the school are in support of your child's education and safety - giving them the best opportunity to learn. Following the last OFSTED inspection we are confident we are getting this right – as they assessed Leadership and Management as Outstanding. Danemill is a great school and you should be proud to be a part of it too!

About School Governance

Like Governors, Advisory Board Members (ABMs) are volunteers who work closely with the Headteacher and the school’s senior management team to ensure that the school provides the best possible education for all children. ABMs are generally parents, professionals and members of the community from all walks of life, who bring varied skills and experience to support the leadership of the school.

The Advisory Board is not a legal entity in its own right and members of the Advisory Board are not Governors in law. Legal liability remains with Discovery Schools Academies Trust and the Board of Directors, who are ultimately responsible for the running of the school. Members of the Advisory Board are referred to as ‘Members’ and although Members do not have the legal responsibilities of Governors, they have a key role in ensuring the good governance of the school. The appointment of the Advisory Board members and details of their delegated powers are detailed in the Trust’s Scheme of Delegation

Typically, Advisory Boards meet six times a year (once each half term). Each meeting is timetabled to include a specific focus, matched to the school’s priorities, such as reviewing data and the school curriculum, target setting, budget tracking, communication with parents, pupil wellbeing and school compliance information e.g. Safeguarding, ICT, HR, H&S, Finance, as outlined in the board's Terms of Reference

ABMs also play an active part in school life (attend performances, fundraisers, sports days etc), and carry out regular monitoring visits in school in our area of focus (eg SEN, Mathematics, English, Safeguarding etc) so you and the children should see us around and about at school!

Our Advisory Board Members

At Danemill we currently have 9 ABMs in total: two Parent Governors (elected by the parent body), four Staff Governors (the Headteacher plus three governors elected by the staff body) and five Community Governors (elected by the governing body).

Becoming an Advisory Board Members at Danemill

Advisory Board Members join the school from many walks of life. You do not need any prior experience of school governance, substantial training is provided. Some join as Parent ABMs (while their children are pupils at the school), some as Community ABMs (who may not have any other link to the school but live or work in the local community), and some as Staff ABMs to represent the staff body.

Many employers actively encourage their staff to take up a community role like this and many offer time out of work to do so, as all ABMs do need to visit school during the day sometimes, as well as attend evening meetings and events.

When we have a vacancy on the advisory board, details will be posted on this page.
